SMILE E-Graphiti

This lesson uses the artwork of Alisa Singer to engage students to learn more about climate change, research, and data representation. Students will be asked to interpret figures created by OSU scientists, and reimagine them as abstract art pieces. This activity culminates with a flier campaign in which students post artwork around their community.

Making the Plants We Eat

Students engage in activities related to plant domestication (plant breeding), and plant genetic modification. The goal is for students to learn that both of these methods include similar goals - developing safe and nutritious food more efficiently for a growing population, and are currently being used to improve the plants we grow for food.

RCRV: Dream Green

What does it mean to go green? Students will learn about the green technologies aboard the RCRVs, and brainstorm opportunities for other working boats to incorporate environmentally friendly tech. Next, they will explore their own school buildings on an energy efficiency scavenger hunt. Finally, they will learn about organizing campaigns to raise awareness about climate justice.

Art Integration

Art has always played a significant role in the development of science and how information and discoveries are shared. Art helps make the topics accessible and engaging to audiences of all levels. It can be used to explain complicated topics to the general public in a simple way, but it can also help educate scientists or medical professionals in training with highly detailed images or animations.
